The EU Innovation Fund

With the Paris Climate Agreement, the EU has set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2050. To achieve this goal, the EU is supporting companies to bring climate technologies – “clean tech” – to market with the Innovation Fund.

In total, the EU is investing over 10 billion euros in a climate-neutral future. This makes the funding programme one of the largest for climate protection technologies. Funded projects can receive millions in funding with the help of the programme.

What does the EU Innovation Fund support?

Funding is provided to companies whose innovative projects are on the threshold of market maturity, such as the distribution of new technologies to pilot customers. The Innovation Fund supports pioneering demonstration projects in the areas of:

  • Renewable energies
  • Energy intensive industries
  • Energy storage
  • Carbon capture, use and storage

The Innovation Fund is therefore not funding for research and development projects, but for demonstration projects. The aim is also to promote and commercialise the first industrial implementations, i.e. to enable companies to enter the market.

The Innovation Fund supports two types of projects:

Large-scale projects

The funding call for large projects already started in October 2021. Projects with a volume of more than 7.5 million euros will be funded. The EU is providing 1.5 billion euros in funding for this purpose, which is 50 percent more than in the last funding call in 2020. This is 50 percent more than in the last funding call in 2020. The deadline for submission is 3 March 2022.

Small-scale projects

The second funding call for smaller projects will start on 15 March 2022 and is expected to be open for funding applications until August 2022. In this funding call, projects with a capital expenditure between 2.5 and 7.5 million euros will be subsidised with 60 percent of the capital expenditure. The application procedure is single-stage. A total budget of 100 million euros will be made available.

Who can apply for the EU Innovation Fund?

Companies that bear responsibility for the innovation project are eligible to apply. Projects are therefore possible on a company-by-company basis or in small collaborative projects. The company must be based in an EU member state.
