The EU Innovation Fund is the largest funding programme for climate protection technologies: In total, the EU is investing around 10 billion euros between 2020 and 2030 in a climate-neutral future. Funded projects can receive millions in funding for innovative and low-carbon technologies with the help of the programme.

With the Paris Climate Agreement, the EU has set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2050. To achieve this goal, the EU Innovation Fund supports companies in bringing climate technologies – “clean tech” – to the market. The funding supports solutions and technologies that contribute to the decarbonisation of Europe.

What does the EU Innovation Fund support?

Funding is provided to companies whose innovative projects are on the threshold of market maturity, such as the distribution of new technologies to pilot customers. The Innovation Fund supports pioneering demonstration projects in the areas of:

  • Renewable energies
  • Energy intensive industries
  • Energy storage
  • Carbon capture, use and storage

The Innovation Fund is therefore not funding for research and development projects, but for demonstration projects. Its aim is also to promote and commercialise the first industrial implementations, i.e. to enable companies to enter the market.

Calls for funding

The Innovation Fund supports two types of projects:

Large-scale projects

The third funding call for large projects started on 3 November 2022. Projects with volumes of more than 7.5 million euros will be funded. The EU is making a doubled budget available for this purpose, namely 3 billion euros. The deadline for submission is 16 March 2023.

We recommend: Start applying for your grants through the EU Innovation Fund now!

Small-scale projects

The second funding call for smaller projects started on 15 March 2022 and ended in August 2022. In this funding call, projects with a capital expenditure between 2.5 and 7.5 million euros were subsidised with 60 percent of the capital expenditure. The application procedure is single-stage. A total budget of 100 million euros was made available. Currently, no new funding call has been announced. We will keep you informed here.

Who can apply for the EU Innovation Fund?

Companies that bear responsibility for the innovation project are eligible to apply. Projects are therefore possible on a company-by-company basis or in small collaborative projects. The company must be based in an EU member state.
